1. Introduction

Welcome to Hanzi Hatch, a mobile application provided by Late Byte Labs (“we,” “us,” or “our”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our app and related services (collectively, the “App”). Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. If you do not agree with the terms of this Privacy Policy, please do not use the App.

2. Information We Collect

• Account Information: If you create an account, we collect information such as your email address and password (stored using industry-standard hashing). If you choose to sign in using a third party (e.g., Apple or Google), we receive the basic profile details those providers share with us.

• Learning & Usage Data: We collect data about how you use the App, including quizzes taken, scores, session length, categories studied, progress and streaks, in-app actions, timestamps, and interactions with the virtual pet (e.g., Hunger, Energy, Happiness changes).

• Device & Diagnostics: We may collect device information (model, OS version, app version, language, country/region), IP address (or coarse location derived from IP), and diagnostic data such as crash logs and performance metrics.

• Push Notification Tokens: If you opt in to push notifications, we collect a device push token to send you reminders (e.g., learning streaks, pet care prompts) and important updates.

• Subscription & Purchase Metadata: For premium features, purchase validation and subscription status information (e.g., product ID, expiration date, transaction ID) may be processed. We do not receive or store your full payment card details.

• Cookies & Similar Technologies (Web): If you visit our website or web pages related to the App, we may use cookies or similar technologies to operate the site and understand traffic. The mobile App primarily uses device identifiers instead of cookies.

3. How We Use Your Information

• Provide and Maintain the App: Operate core features (quizzes, audio playback, pet mechanics), authenticate you, sync progress, and maintain your account.

• Personalization: Tailor learning paths, difficulty, categories, and recommendations; keep your pet state in sync with your learning activity.

• Analytics & Improvements: Monitor usage, analyze performance, fix bugs, and improve features and content.

• Communications: Send service-related emails or in-app messages (e.g., changes to features or policy), and optional push notifications you enable (e.g., reminders, streaks).

• Security & Fraud Prevention: Detect, prevent, and respond to suspicious or malicious activity and enforce our Terms.

• Legal Compliance: Comply with applicable laws, lawful requests, and regulatory obligations.

4. Legal Bases for Processing (EEA/UK)

If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your personal data under the following legal bases: (i) Contract (to provide the App), (ii) Legitimate Interests (to improve the App, ensure security, prevent fraud), (iii) Consent (for push notifications or certain analytics where required), and (iv) Legal Obligation (where processing is required by law).

5. How We Share Your Information

• Service Providers: We share information with trusted vendors who help us operate the App, such as cloud hosting, authentication, analytics, crash reporting, and push notifications. These providers process data on our behalf and under confidentiality obligations.

• App Stores & Payment Processors: Purchases and subscriptions are handled by Apple App Store and/or Google Play. We receive limited purchase metadata for validation and support.

• Legal Compliance & Safety: We may disclose information if required by law or to protect rights, property, safety, or to enforce our agreements.

• Business Transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, reorganization, or asset sale, your information may be transferred as permitted by law.

• With Your Consent: We may share information for any other purpose with your explicit consent.

6. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the App, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements. Backups and logs may persist for a limited period (typically up to 90 days) before deletion.

7. Data Security

We implement commercially reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and access controls. However, no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Children’s Privacy

The App is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13 (or under the age of digital consent in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under these ages. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete such information.

9. International Data Transfers

We may process and store information in countries outside your country of residence (e.g., the United States or other regions). Where required, we implement appropriate safeguards for such transfers, such as standard contractual clauses.

10. Your Rights & Choices

• Access, Update, Delete: You may access, correct, or request deletion of certain account information through in-app settings or by contacting us.

• Push Notifications: You can opt in or out at any time via device settings or in-app controls.

• Marketing Emails: You may unsubscribe from non-essential emails using the link in those emails. We may still send service or transactional messages.

• GDPR/UK Rights: Depending on your location, you may have rights to data portability and to object or restrict certain processing. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

• CCPA/CPRA (California): California residents have rights to know, delete, correct, and opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information. We do not sell personal information as defined by the CCPA/CPRA.

11. Third-Party Services

The App may include integrations with third-party services such as authentication, analytics, crash reporting, push notifications, and cloud hosting. These services operate under their own privacy policies. We encourage you to review their policies to understand how they process your data.

12. Offline Use & Local Caching

Certain features may function offline. When offline, some data (e.g. quiz content, audio files, temporary progress) may be cached on your device. Cached data typically syncs to our servers when you reconnect. You can clear local data by logging out and/or uninstalling the App, which removes locally stored app data from your device.

13. Do Not Track

Your browser or device may offer a “Do Not Track” setting. At this time, we do not respond to DNT signals. We will update this policy if our position changes.

14. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last Updated” date at the top indicates when the latest changes were made. Material changes will be communicated in-App or by other reasonable means. Your continued use of the App after changes take effect indicates your acceptance of the revised policy.
